Spring update with this weeks report

We have had a challenging spring, significantly impacted by drought conditions, yet marked by some successes here and there.

The season began promisingly with Angus Griffiths landing the first fish on February 4th from the Bank pool, with the gauge at 6″. By March 10th, a total of 6 salmon had been recorded, marking the best start since 1995, despite the already prevalent lack of water.

Water levels fluctuated significantly throughout the early season. After Angus’s initial catch, the water dropped until a brief rise to minus 6″ on March 3rd. This rise allowed Rick Verbeeten to catch two salmon, one from Gardners and another from the neck of the Morail. The water receded again until March 10th, when it briefly rose to 2ft 3″, enabling John Ritchie, Scott Maclean, and Finlay to each catch a salmon from the Morail.

Following this, a period of no water ensued until a small rise on March 29th. Mark Arkwright managed to catch a 7lb salmon from Gardners with the gauge at three inches.

The first tenants arrived on March 30th to a gauge reading of 3ft, but this quickly dropped to 0″ by the morning. Host Olly Alston successfully caught two salmon from the Morail that day. Despite the river dropping to minus 9″ by the end of the week, Jason Ellis and Angus Nicoll each added a salmon to the count from the Washerwoman and the neck of the Morail, respectively.

Another dry spell followed until a small rise to minus 7″ on April 29th. Stuart Lodge unfortunately lost a good salmon in the neck of the Morail, but persevered and caught an 8lb salmon from Charlies on April 30th.

The river then drops to a record low until this week when the Emslie party arrived. Ed Hitchman kicked off their week with his first-ever salmon, weighing about 10lb, from Contractors, with the gauge at minus 10″.

The following day saw a good rise in the river to 1ft 6″. Charlotte Emslie caught a 15lb salmon from the Morail, and her husband Jamie added two more to the book at 13lb and 7lb, also from the Morail.

On Wednesday, with 6″ on the gauge, three more salmon were recorded. Ed Grissell caught his first ever fish from Contractors, followed by another from Charlies before lunch. Charlotte Emslie also had a successful hour, landing an 18lb salmon from the neck of the Morail.

Thursday brought a rising river, reaching 1ft 10″, but the water was dirty, resulting in a blank day. However, on Friday, with the river at 1ft 3″, Edd Hitchman saved the day from another blank by catching an 8lb salmon at 11:20 pm.

Today, Jamie Emslie landed a 10lber from Field at 8am.

Week of the 6th July

The Howieson party caught two salmon and four grilse for their week

On the 9th Fen caught a grilse in Kennel run and then a 15lber in Field. Alison Baker also caught a grilse from Burnmouth.

On the 11th Alison Baker caught a lovely 16lber from the Washerwoman.

On Saturday the river was down to minus 6 but the grilse were still going through the beat and Alison caught two. One came from the Washerwoman and one from Gardners run. Both on a Sunray shadow.

A good number of fish were lost during the week.

Week of the 30th June

We had good water all week peaking at about 5ft on Friday night with the water temperature between 49f and 56f.

We had another good week with 6 salmon, 10 grilse and 4 sea trout landed.

Tim Clarke got us off the mark on Monday with a 10lber from the Washerwoman and Jemima Grande caught a grilse in Ronnies on a hitched 10 silver stoat on Tuesday.

On Thursday the river was up to 1ft 6 and 7 were landed. Lydia White landed her first fish from the Morail , a salmon of 7lb followed by a grilse later in the day. Jim Browne, Eliza Wood, Jos Clarke and Angus Griffiths had a grilse each from the Morail and Jemima Grande caught a 15lber from the Washerwoman.

On Friday off the back of a 5ft spate 6 were landed. First thing the river was running at 2ft 3 but quickly dropped back. Tim Clarke caught a grilse in Contractors, Rollo Grande caught a 6lber in Frenchmans and another at 6lb in Lower Craigs. Jos Clarke caught a 6lber in Lower Craigs and both Finlay and Lydia caught a grilse each in the Morail.

Only 1 grilse was caught on Saturday, a 4lb fish from Morail after dinner to Tim Clarke.

Again we had another week with as many lost as were caught. As I’ve said before, these fish are not just on and off they have been played and just drop off. It is encouraging how many fish we are seeing especially on Friday when fish between 3 and 7lb were showing from Kennel run to well below the tail of Gardners which was as far as we went. I suspect they were right down through to the Boat pool because Jim was on the other side with a couple of guests concentrating on Little Rock to Boat.

Week of the 23rd June

The week started with low water and fishing was light until the river rose quickly on Friday morning which I posted on social media.

Richard Haworth caught a 5lb fish from the tail of the Morail in the early evening followed by a sea trout of about 2lb.

On Saturday Angus Griffiths landed a cracking salmon of 17lb from Lower Craigs and a grilse from Millers. In the early evening, Ian Wilkinson landed 2 salmon of 7lb from the Morail and Dr James Robertson had a 2lb sea trout. 5 other sea trout were landed over the two days.

Week of the 17th June

We had some high water over the weekend so we had high hopes on Monday.

With the water down to 9 inches, the host, Jonathan Sykes landed three before breakfast from the Morail going on to land six for the day. Four came from the Morail and two from behind the rock in Millers. The biggest at 18lb from the Morail. Andy MacInnes also caught one from behind the rock in Millers at 10lb.

Simon Hearn caught an 18lber from the Morail and Mark Butler had a grilse of 4lb, also from the Morail.

On the 18th with 11 inches on the gauge, Simon Hearn had a 10lber from Lower Craigs, Andy MacInnes caught a 14lber from Bank and Liliana Sykes caught a lovely 12lber from the tail of Contractors which tried to go out the tail of the pool twice.

On the 9th with 3 inches on the gauge, Jonathan Sykes caught a lovely fresh salmon of 20lb from Kennel run.

11 sea trout were also landed for the week, some fishing the Morail late in the evening.

We also lost around 17 salmon during the week. I have never seen as many fish lost. Having landed 11 and lost 7 myself this year I am at a loss to explain why. I’m sure someone will tell me when I post this !!

We don’t know the total catch from the river for the week but three rods on Amat had twenty four between Monday and Tuesday and Dounie had 7. The other beats also had some big fish. We traditionally had the big fish arrive in May. Are they running later now?

Week of the 2nd June

Firstly I’d like to address why Angus and I were fishing and where the tenants were.

The Birketts were hosting a big charity event back home at Rievaulx estate on Friday and therefor travelled home to oversee it on Thursday.

We had no water until Thursday when the river came up to 0” on the gauge dropping to minus 2”. 4 salmon were caught. I had a 9lb salmon on a sunray hitch in Keepers then two salmon at 9 and 10lb from the Morail slowly stripping an 8 Kyley across the good spots. I also had a sea trout of about 2.5lb and 1.5lb. I also lost a good fish after 5 minutes. Angus Griffiths caught a fish of about 12lb from Contractors. Angus also lost 1. I think it was in the Washerwoman.

Saturday saw the river rise to 1ft 6. 8 Salmon and the first grilse of the season were caught. 6 salmon were also lost, 5 of them leading them to where we land them in the Morail.

I landed 5 salmon from the tail of the Morail at 15, 14, 14, 10 and 7lb. I also landed the grilse in Kennel run. I lost the other fish in Kennel run, having played it for 5 minutes and having absolutely no control over it that time.

Angus caught 3 all from the tail of the Morail weighing 12, 10 and 8lb. He also lost the other 3.

I believe the opposition had 2 salmon from the Morail weighing about 15 and 17lb

We all know salmon are becoming more scarce and on a red-letter day like this I always try and get the tenants to take advantage of the conditions. Here is why. I stopped briefly for lunch but Angus kept fishing and he caught 2 fish. He went for his lunch when I got back and I caught 2 fish. If we’d both stopped we’d have been 4 fish down. Need I say more!!

April consisted of Easterly wind, snow and unseasonably warm weather in random order.

The Alston party caught 1 salmon for their week, a 7lber at 20.10pm on the Saturday night with a Collie on the surface in a bitterly east wind. Oscar Hedgecoe was standing on the gauge rock at the neck of the Morail when the fish took.

Colin Campbell’s party caught 2 for their week.

On the 12th Mary Nicholson caught 1 in the Morail on the back of a rise in water. In the afternoon there were fish showing all over the Morail and down into Kennel run before they disappeared over the falls. On the 13th Colin Campbell caught an 11lber in Gardners with 3 inches on the gauge.

The Arkwright party caught 1 for their week. Thomas Arkwright caught the 7lber from the Rock on the Monday afternoon. The weather warmed up and by Thursday the water temperature reached 57f !!

Last week the Gilmore party caught 4, 3 of them on Friday off a rise in water to 6 inches on our gauge. Alasdair Mackie caught 1 from the Morail at 8lb, Andrew Elder caught 1 in Gardners at 7lb and Bill Gilmore caught his from the Morail at 7lb.

On Saturday Alasdair Mackie caught 1 in Gardners weighing 7lb.

March started off well on the Carron with around 30 salmon off the river which was as good as anywhere in Scotland but with the water temperature being high for the spring the fish did not stop more than a day or two below the Morail falls. The fish could have gone over the Morail falls on the 21st of March and were then in the Glencalvie falls on the 5th of April. Most years that could be a month early.

Week of the 26th June

Again the forecast promised us rain every day and again it was wrong!!

With minus 15″ on the gauge the Munro Ford party did exceptionally well in their first week at Braelangwell with 4 grilse for the week.

On Monday Rollo Grandy caught 1 from Upper Craigs on a small black Francis with a couple of sea lice on it.

On Wednesday Jemima Grandy caught a fresh grilse from the neck of the Washerwoman.

Fishing after dinner on Friday night Jim Browne caught a nice 2lb sea trout.

We had a small rise on Friday night and 2 fresh grilse were caught on Saturday. Jos Clarke caught 1 in Gardners and Adriana Navarrete caught her first fish from the neck of Millers.

Week of the 19th June

There was some rain at the weekend giving a small rise in the water height for Monday morning. Jimmy Royds caught a grilse in Contractors on a hitch and Liliana Sykes caught another grilse in the neck of the Washerwoman skating a sunray across the surface. There was minus 8″ on the gauge.

On Tuesday we were down to minus 11″ but another two were added to the book. Mark Butler caught a grilse in Keepers on a stoats tail and Clare MacInnes caught a grilse in the neck of Millers on a small red francis.

Week of the 29th May

The wee started off the back of some good water the previous week so expectations were high.

Monday started with about 3 inches on the gauge and 4 salmon were landed. Finlay had 2, 1 from Lower Craigs and 1 from Field. The host Robert Sloss Had 1 from Washerwoman on a Collie and Simon Prichard had 1 in Boat on a Snaelda.

The river rose overnight and was 1ft 9″ first thing. Angus Sloss took advantage of the dropping river and was on the Morail at the back of 5am. He was rewarded with 2 from the tail of the Morail. Later Robert Sloss caught 1 from Lower Craigs on a hitch and a lovely 12lber from Kennel run.

On the 1st of June, another 2 were added, Simon Prichard caught the first grilse of the season in Contractors on a hitch and just after arriving Fred Sloss caught an 8lber from the neck of Washerwoman on a hitch 2nd cast.

By Saturday the river had dropped to minus 8″ and the sun had well and truly came out but Fred Sloss tempted a very small grilse of about 1.5lb from the neck of the Morail on a micro red Francis.
