Spring update with this weeks report

We have had a challenging spring, significantly impacted by drought conditions, yet marked by some successes here and there.

The season began promisingly with Angus Griffiths landing the first fish on February 4th from the Bank pool, with the gauge at 6″. By March 10th, a total of 6 salmon had been recorded, marking the best start since 1995, despite the already prevalent lack of water.

Water levels fluctuated significantly throughout the early season. After Angus’s initial catch, the water dropped until a brief rise to minus 6″ on March 3rd. This rise allowed Rick Verbeeten to catch two salmon, one from Gardners and another from the neck of the Morail. The water receded again until March 10th, when it briefly rose to 2ft 3″, enabling John Ritchie, Scott Maclean, and Finlay to each catch a salmon from the Morail.

Following this, a period of no water ensued until a small rise on March 29th. Mark Arkwright managed to catch a 7lb salmon from Gardners with the gauge at three inches.

The first tenants arrived on March 30th to a gauge reading of 3ft, but this quickly dropped to 0″ by the morning. Host Olly Alston successfully caught two salmon from the Morail that day. Despite the river dropping to minus 9″ by the end of the week, Jason Ellis and Angus Nicoll each added a salmon to the count from the Washerwoman and the neck of the Morail, respectively.

Another dry spell followed until a small rise to minus 7″ on April 29th. Stuart Lodge unfortunately lost a good salmon in the neck of the Morail, but persevered and caught an 8lb salmon from Charlies on April 30th.

The river then drops to a record low until this week when the Emslie party arrived. Ed Hitchman kicked off their week with his first-ever salmon, weighing about 10lb, from Contractors, with the gauge at minus 10″.

The following day saw a good rise in the river to 1ft 6″. Charlotte Emslie caught a 15lb salmon from the Morail, and her husband Jamie added two more to the book at 13lb and 7lb, also from the Morail.

On Wednesday, with 6″ on the gauge, three more salmon were recorded. Ed Grissell caught his first ever fish from Contractors, followed by another from Charlies before lunch. Charlotte Emslie also had a successful hour, landing an 18lb salmon from the neck of the Morail.

Thursday brought a rising river, reaching 1ft 10″, but the water was dirty, resulting in a blank day. However, on Friday, with the river at 1ft 3″, Edd Hitchman saved the day from another blank by catching an 8lb salmon at 11:20 pm.

Today, Jamie Emslie landed a 10lber from Field at 8am.

Spring round-up

Our spring has been dominated by low water and fewer fish than usual. In the 10 weeks that the lodge has been let we have had 7 weeks with little or no water which has really skewed the returns. We thought there would be a good spring when on the week of the 26th March at least 17 salmon were landed below us. With the water being cold the fish didn’t seem keen to run and we ended the week blank. That was our only blank week which is amazing considering the low water. The water temperature rose quickly letting the fish run straight through us and the first salmon were seen at the Glencalvie falls on the 6th of April a full month earlier than most years.

We landed 23 salmon to the end of May well down on the 61 landed last year. The last fish of the spring was landed by Jonathan Sykes, a cracker at 18lb from the neck of the Morail on a Silver stoat micro conehead. On the 1st of June, Rob Sloss managed to tempt a salmon from the neck of Millers which was good going considering the water was off the bottom of the gauge

On the upside, the first three weeks of May saw fish running steadily through the beat. Bow waves of fish were seen moving through pools during the day and fish going over the Morail falls were really encouraging considering reports from elsewhere. This seemed to peak in the third week. We saw fish on the bottom beat in the morning, the top beat in the afternoon then sealiced fish were being caught at Glencalvie in the evening.

Week of the 14th of May

Again the forecast was wrong, so we had very little water for the week except for a small rise midweek.

Despite the low water fish were seen running in various places. On the 17th Jonty Goodchild caught 2, 1 from the neck of the Washerwoman and 1 from the Rock. Both on a quarter-inch tungsten red Francis weighing 10 and 12lb.

On the 18th Peter Jones caught an 11lb salmon from the Washerwoman and Tim Cross caught an 8lber from the Rock. ” other fish were lost.

Gruinards caught 4 with a further 3 from Glencalvie. Most of the fish were fresh if not sea liced.

Week of the 8th May

Yet again we were forecast rain but yet again it didn’t materialise.

On the 8th with minus 11″ on the gauge, Rick Verbeeten landed a 7lb salmon from the Washerwoman on a 10 Red Ally.

The river came up on the 11th and was very dirty. At 5 am it was 9 inches dropping to -4″ by 7.30 pm. 5 salmon were caught, all from the Morail.

Dave Barnfield started the ball rolling with the first grilse of the season at 6.30am. Roger Brackpool caught an 11lb salmon just before lunch carrying long tail lice. Between 5.15pm and 7.15pm Dave Barnfield, Alan Lutman and Dave Bell caught 1 each. This was Dave Bells first salmon at 9lb. All were returned safely.

Throughout the week salmon were seen running with bow waves appearing in various pools along with them going over the Morail falls and the falls at the Steps pool on Amat which was encouraging.

The Gray party caught 2 salmon for their week.

On the 2nd, with minus 5″ on the gauge, Cisa Gray caught a 7lber from Lower Craigs

On Saturday literally on the last cast of the day, David Jenkins caught a 5.5lb sea-sliced salmon from the Rock pool. By this time the river was down to minus 12″

April

April consisted of Easterly wind, snow and unseasonably warm weather in random order.

The Alston party caught 1 salmon for their week, a 7lber at 20.10pm on the Saturday night with a Collie on the surface in a bitterly east wind. Oscar Hedgecoe was standing on the gauge rock at the neck of the Morail when the fish took.

Colin Campbell’s party caught 2 for their week.

On the 12th Mary Nicholson caught 1 in the Morail on the back of a rise in water. In the afternoon there were fish showing all over the Morail and down into Kennel run before they disappeared over the falls. On the 13th Colin Campbell caught an 11lber in Gardners with 3 inches on the gauge.

The Arkwright party caught 1 for their week. Thomas Arkwright caught the 7lber from the Rock on the Monday afternoon. The weather warmed up and by Thursday the water temperature reached 57f !!

Last week the Gilmore party caught 4, 3 of them on Friday off a rise in water to 6 inches on our gauge. Alasdair Mackie caught 1 from the Morail at 8lb, Andrew Elder caught 1 in Gardners at 7lb and Bill Gilmore caught his from the Morail at 7lb.

On Saturday Alasdair Mackie caught 1 in Gardners weighing 7lb.

March started off well on the Carron with around 30 salmon off the river which was as good as anywhere in Scotland but with the water temperature being high for the spring the fish did not stop more than a day or two below the Morail falls. The fish could have gone over the Morail falls on the 21st of March and were then in the Glencalvie falls on the 5th of April. Most years that could be a month early.

Spring 2022

Although Daniel Logie got the Carron off the mark on the 1st of February with a springer from the tail of the Morail on the Gruinards side it was the 17th of February before Finlay caught our first fish, a 17lber, again from the tail of the morail.

The water dropped off for most of March but Jean Matterson saved a blank month with a springer from the Washerwoman with about minus 14″ on the gauge.

April saw 19 salmon landed with many more lost. The best week was the week of the 3rd with 13 landed on this side. Our tenant, Olly Alston also had Gruinards opposite and 2 rods on Dounie and between the three beats, they had 34 to between 5 and 7 rods.

We caught 39 salmon for May with the week of the 8th being the best. Nick Jupps’s party landed 13 for their week. Again most of the month was dry saved by good water between the 26th and the 3rd of June.

Nicky Griffiths’s part caught 7 and Rob Sloss’s caught 8 to the 31st and 11 for the week including the first grilse on the 1st from Contractors.

Week of the 22nd May

It was a quiet start to the week until a small rise on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday James Hunt caught an 11lb salmon in the Rock pool.

On Thursday the river was up after rain the night before. Jamie Urquhart caught a 9lb salmon with Long tail lice, again from the Rock pool. It was also very windy.

It rained all day Thursday and on Friday the river peaked at about 5ft 3″. On the fall Paddy Miller caught an 8lber in the Morail with 3ft on the gauge.

On Saturday we started with 1ft 9″. Nicky Griffiths got off the mark first with a 9lb salmon from the Morail before breakfast. She then had another 9lber from Lower Craigs then a cracking 16lber from the Morail in the afternoon. Paddy Miller caught a 9lber from Kennel Run in the afternoon and Finlay also caught a 7lber in Kennel run fishing in the evening.

The weather forecasting was shockingly bad all week promising rain that didn’t really come.

There was a freshen up on the 20th which took the water temperature down from 60f to 54f and the wind also went out of the East which brought some fresh fish through the beat.

With minus 11 on the gauge, Tim cross caught 2 on the 20th, 1 from Keepers and 1 from the neck of the Morail. Both had sea lice. Tom Dawson also caught 1 from the neck of Lower Craigs.

On the 21st Jonty Goodchild caught a fresh 10lber from the neck of the Morail before breakfast.

Week of the 8th of May

The Jupp party landed 13 salmon for the week.

With minus 10″ on the gauge Dave Barnfield started proceedings with a 15.5lber from the neck of the Morail before breakfast on Monday morning.

On Wednesday the river rose to 1ft 6″ and 8 were landed, 4 while it was rising and 4 late in the day as it started to drop. Two came from Kennel run, 5 from the Morail and 1 from Millers. Dave Barnfield caught 2, Alan Lutman caught 3, Rick Verbeeten caught 2 and Nick Jupp 1.

On Thursday 3 were landed. Nick Jupp caught the first at 6.15 am from the Morail and Dave Barnfield had one from Frenchmans and another from Burnmouth.

On Friday Rick Verbeeten caught the last fish of the week at 7.30 am from Frenchmans. After that, it all went quiet.

Strangely we didn’t land a fish below Kennel run !!
