Week of the 7th September

Tags :

The Burge party arrived to low water but a spate on Tuesday brought the river up but the water was dirty and full of leaves, By Wednesday morning the water was clear and running at 2’ 9”

Seven salmon were landed, mostly in the afternoon or early evening. John Knott caught a 10lber from Millers, Mike Burge caught a 10lber from Washerwoman, John Collins caught an 11lber from the Morail and a 9lber from Washerwoman, Paul Birch caught a 10lber from Washerwoman and a 7lber from the tail of the Morail. Lastly, Simon Stow, fishing on his own caught a fish of at least 20lb from the Morail which gave him a real battle.

On Thursday the river was running at 1’ 6” and eight were landed. Again, at least five were landed between 6 and 7pm. John Knott caught a 6lber from Bank and Mike Burge caught a 7lber from the Washerwoman. John Collins caught two from the Washerwoman at 10 and 14lb. Finlay caught a grilse from Millers then between 6 and 7pm caught three from the Scarp, best 16lb.

Nothing was landed on Friday although I think five were lost.

On Saturday with 6” on the gauge, two were landed. John Collins and Mike Burge both caught a 6lber from the Washerwoman.

Week of the 30th June

We had good water all week peaking at about 5ft on Friday night with the water temperature between 49f and 56f.

We had another good week with 6 salmon, 10 grilse and 4 sea trout landed.

Tim Clarke got us off the mark on Monday with a 10lber from the Washerwoman and Jemima Grande caught a grilse in Ronnies on a hitched 10 silver stoat on Tuesday.

On Thursday the river was up to 1ft 6 and 7 were landed. Lydia White landed her first fish from the Morail , a salmon of 7lb followed by a grilse later in the day. Jim Browne, Eliza Wood, Jos Clarke and Angus Griffiths had a grilse each from the Morail and Jemima Grande caught a 15lber from the Washerwoman.

On Friday off the back of a 5ft spate 6 were landed. First thing the river was running at 2ft 3 but quickly dropped back. Tim Clarke caught a grilse in Contractors, Rollo Grande caught a 6lber in Frenchmans and another at 6lb in Lower Craigs. Jos Clarke caught a 6lber in Lower Craigs and both Finlay and Lydia caught a grilse each in the Morail.

Only 1 grilse was caught on Saturday, a 4lb fish from Morail after dinner to Tim Clarke.

Again we had another week with as many lost as were caught. As I’ve said before, these fish are not just on and off they have been played and just drop off. It is encouraging how many fish we are seeing especially on Friday when fish between 3 and 7lb were showing from Kennel run to well below the tail of Gardners which was as far as we went. I suspect they were right down through to the Boat pool because Jim was on the other side with a couple of guests concentrating on Little Rock to Boat.

Week of the 17th June

We had some high water over the weekend so we had high hopes on Monday.

With the water down to 9 inches, the host, Jonathan Sykes landed three before breakfast from the Morail  going on to land six for the day. Four came from the Morail and two from behind the rock in Millers. The biggest at 18lb from the Morail. Andy MacInnes also caught one from behind the rock in Millers at 10lb.

Simon Hearn caught an 18lber from the Morail and Mark Butler had a grilse of 4lb, also from the Morail.

On the 18th with 11 inches on the gauge, Simon Hearn had a 10lber from Lower Craigs, Andy MacInnes caught a 14lber from Bank and Liliana Sykes caught a lovely 12lber from the tail of Contractors which tried to go out the tail of the pool twice.

On the 9th with 3 inches on the gauge, Jonathan Sykes caught a lovely fresh salmon of 20lb from Kennel run.

11 sea trout were also landed for the week, some fishing the Morail late in the evening.

We also lost around 17 salmon during the week. I have never seen as many fish lost. Having landed 11 and lost 7 myself this year I am at a loss to explain why. I’m sure someone will tell me when I post this !!

We don’t know the total catch from the river for the week but three rods on Amat had twenty four between Monday and Tuesday and Dounie had 7. The other beats also had some big fish. We traditionally had the big fish arrive in May. Are they running later now?

Last couple of weeks

Tags :

The Last couple of weeks have been hard work due to lack of water.

Professor Bill Gilmore’s party landed 1 salmon for their week caught by Jerry Alexander from the neck of the Morail on a half-inch Ally shrimp on the 27th weighing 7lb. The river was running at minus 4″.

Last week the Gray party caught 2. Jerry Alexander stays on for the week and he landed both fish. One from the neck of the Morail at 8lb on the 1st and one from Keepers weighing 10lb on the 6th. Both were on a 12 Ally shrimp. On the 1st the river was running at minus 7″ and by Saturday was down to minus 9″.

Several times during the week fish were seen going over the Morail falls.

Week of the 18th September

The week started with 2ft on the gauge and a drop in water temperature to 53f dropping down to 48f on Saturday morning. The water was unsettled and rising on 4 of the 6 days but we managed 13 salmon and 5 grilse for the week. All the fish were taken on sink tips.

Stuart Walker caught the biggest at 36.5″ so, about 17lb and was top rod with 4. we also had 2 first fish. Archie Raffan caught an 8lber from Gruinards run on a Kyley and Roger Drayton caught an 8lber from Gardners.

18 salmon is a very good week but the party fished hard for that fishing before breakfast and till 7pm most days. It is a good indication that there are not as many fish in the system. The party have the record week for the beat which was 49 under similar conditions.

Update

Sorry for the lack of updates.

We finally got some water in July which produced some good fishing.

The week of the 3rd of July produced 4 grilse and 2 salmon for the Cameron party. The water ran between 9 inches and minus 6.

The week of the 9th produced 17 to the Howieson party including 11 to Fen Howieson. The river was quite unsettled during the week running between 7ft and 0. A good number of sea trout made an appearance. Fen landed the biggest, at 3lb and sea liced from the Bank pool. We counted up at the end of the week and 15 fish were also lost for the week.

The Dawson party landed 15 in the week of the 16th with at least another 15 lost. The river was running between 3ft and 0.

The river dropped away the week of the 23rd resulting in just the one fish for the week. Harry Jenkins caught a sea sliced 4lber from Judges. The river was below 0 all week

The week of the 30th July also produced one. Angus Griffiths caught a 5lber in the Washerwoman.

The river rose a bit on the week of the 6th and the Arkwright party landed 2.

On the week of the 13th, with the river running between 1ft and minus 6 the Birts party had high hopes but we were disappointed to just land 4. Charlie Hughs did catch his first fish though, a fish roughly 6.5lb from the Boat pool.

Week of the 9th of July

Well, we certainly got the rain we have been looking for. It was unsettled, to say the least with water heights between 3ft to 3 inches to 7.5ft during the week. 7 salmon 9 grilse and 5 sea trout were landed. 15 fish were also lost a good number of these were just before landing.

On the 11th Fen Howieson got us off the mark with a 10lb salmon from the Morail with 2ft 3 on the gauge.

The 12th was the best day with 8 in the book, 7 of them to Fen Howieson and 1 to Chris Plank. With 2ft 6 on the gauge, 3 came from the Morail and the others came from Frenchmans, Millers, Burnmouth, Kennel run and Boat. Fen lost 3 other fish from Kennel run and Gardners run.

On the 13th the river was running at 3 inches and 4 were landed, Bob Barclay caught a 6lber from the neck of the Washerwoman, Chris Plank caught a grilse from Lower Craigs and Fen Howieson had 2, one from Charlies and the other from Rock. He also had a sea trout of 3lb from Bank. Fen hooked a big fish in Bank which after cruising around for a while decided to go out the tail of the pool and down the Gruinards side of the island when it then threw the hook.

On the 14 with 0″ on the gauge, Harry McCombie landed 2, one from the neck of the Washerwoman on his 4th cast and one from the head of Contractors on his 2nd cast.

On the 15th Chris Plank caught a 2lb grilse from Millers with 5ft on the gauge. The day started with over 7ft on the gauge, it dropped to 3ft 6 but we had some huge thunderstorms resulting in a rising river late afternoon.

It was really good to see Bob Barclay and Harry McCombie after a gap of around 10 years. Harry at 81 walked the whole of the bottom beat every day.

Week if the 2nd of July

The Cameron party landed two salmon and four grilse for their week after we had some very much welcomed rain. We had the best and most consistent water since the second week of March. Unbelievably, it was the first week this season that we fished the top beat with decent water.

On the 3rd David Kleeman landed a grilse with long tail sea lice from the tail of the Morail. We went straight to Kennel run where he had another two grilse on briefly.

Two salmon and a grilse were landed on Wednesday. David Kleeman landed a fresh grilse in Kennel run, Graham Wilson caught a 10lber from Field and Lizzie Blair caught a 8lber from Upper Craigs.

On the 7th 2two grilse were landed David Kleeman landed his 3rd fish of the week from Kennel run. Another fresh 5lber and Iain Mackie caught a fresh 4lber from the Washerwoman at 10pm.
