Although Daniel Logie got the Carron off the mark on the 1st of February with a springer from the tail of the Morail on the Gruinards side it was the 17th of February before Finlay caught our first fish, a 17lber, again from the tail of the morail.

The water dropped off for most of March but Jean Matterson saved a blank month with a springer from the Washerwoman with about minus 14″ on the gauge.

April saw 19 salmon landed with many more lost. The best week was the week of the 3rd with 13 landed on this side. Our tenant, Olly Alston also had Gruinards opposite and 2 rods on Dounie and between the three beats, they had 34 to between 5 and 7 rods.

We caught 39 salmon for May with the week of the 8th being the best. Nick Jupps’s party landed 13 for their week. Again most of the month was dry saved by good water between the 26th and the 3rd of June.

Nicky Griffiths’s part caught 7 and Rob Sloss’s caught 8 to the 31st and 11 for the week including the first grilse on the 1st from Contractors.

Week of the 22nd May

It was a quiet start to the week until a small rise on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday James Hunt caught an 11lb salmon in the Rock pool.

On Thursday the river was up after rain the night before. Jamie Urquhart caught a 9lb salmon with Long tail lice, again from the Rock pool. It was also very windy.

It rained all day Thursday and on Friday the river peaked at about 5ft 3″. On the fall Paddy Miller caught an 8lber in the Morail with 3ft on the gauge.

On Saturday we started with 1ft 9″. Nicky Griffiths got off the mark first with a 9lb salmon from the Morail before breakfast. She then had another 9lber from Lower Craigs then a cracking 16lber from the Morail in the afternoon. Paddy Miller caught a 9lber from Kennel Run in the afternoon and Finlay also caught a 7lber in Kennel run fishing in the evening.

Week of the 15th May

The weather forecasting was shockingly bad all week promising rain that didn’t really come.

There was a freshen up on the 20th which took the water temperature down from 60f to 54f and the wind also went out of the East which brought some fresh fish through the beat.

With minus 11 on the gauge, Tim cross caught 2 on the 20th, 1 from Keepers and 1 from the neck of the Morail. Both had sea lice. Tom Dawson also caught 1 from the neck of Lower Craigs.

On the 21st Jonty Goodchild caught a fresh 10lber from the neck of the Morail before breakfast.

Week of the 8th of May

The Jupp party landed 13 salmon for the week.

With minus 10″ on the gauge Dave Barnfield started proceedings with a 15.5lber from the neck of the Morail before breakfast on Monday morning.

On Wednesday the river rose to 1ft 6″ and 8 were landed, 4 while it was rising and 4 late in the day as it started to drop. Two came from Kennel run, 5 from the Morail and 1 from Millers. Dave Barnfield caught 2, Alan Lutman caught 3, Rick Verbeeten caught 2 and Nick Jupp 1.

On Thursday 3 were landed. Nick Jupp caught the first at 6.15 am from the Morail and Dave Barnfield had one from Frenchmans and another from Burnmouth.

On Friday Rick Verbeeten caught the last fish of the week at 7.30 am from Frenchmans. After that, it all went quiet.

Strangely we didn’t land a fish below Kennel run !!

Week of the 2nd May

We had a rise in water on Sunday but by Monday morning the water was back to minus 7″. We ended the week with a small rise to minus 6″

On the 2nd Dr Stuart Gray caught a 7lb salmon from Judges followed quickly by a 2lb sea trout with sea lice. This is early for sea trout but we did have one of a pound back in the week of the 3rd of April. David Jenkins caught a7lb salmon in the Smooth pool. We haven’t had a salmon from this pool since 2016!

On the 3rd and 4th David Jenkins caught an 8.5lb and 7lber from Keepers run. Again it was 2016 since we caught a salmon there. It just shows that on a river like the Carron fish everything, keep moving and don’t get fixated by the good pools.

On the 7th David Jenkins caught a 7 lber from Gardners. He also lost a salmon in Pigeon rock.

Cracking week

A cracking week was had at Braelangwell with 18 springers landed.

On Monday morning the river was running at minus 9”. Nick Jupp went out before breakfast and caught a salmon from Gardners weighing 10lb. What was remarkable was the air temp was -3c and the rod rings were freezing meaning that he had to keep putting the rod in the water to defrost them. By the afternoon the river had dropped to minus 12” and there was a bitter East wind. Alan Lutman landed a 12lber from Millers.

Three fish were lost on Tuesday.

On Thursday the river rose all morning and peaked mid-afternoon at 3ft 3. 7 salmon were landed. Alan Lutman caught first, a 14lber from Kennel run which is a sure sign fish are running. Dave Barnfield caught the first of 5 from the Morail, a fine 20lber on a conehead Cascade. Rick Verbeeten had 1, plus another from Kennel run and Finlay caught 3 in quick succession.

On Friday 8 springers were landed. We started the day with 9 inches on the gauge going down to 3 inches then back up to 6 inches by the end of fishing.

Nick Jupp caught a 10lber from the Morail first thing, Rick Verbeeten caught 2, 1 from Kennel run the other from Lower Craigs which we managed to get tagged. Roger Brackpool caught 2, 1 from Gardners and the other from the Morail. Alan Lutman caught 1 from Bank and Dave Barnfield went up to Frenchmans and caught 2.

On Saturday the river was down to minus 5”. Rick Verbeeten caught the only springer of the day from Contractors. He also caught a fresh sea trout from Gardners.

Apart from the 20lber 1 was 14lb, 2 at 12lb 4 were 10lb, 9 at 8lb and 1 at 6lb

Season summary

We caught the first salmon of the season on the 10th of March from the Morail weighing 8.5lb, caught by Finlay on a 2” Angry Ailsa tube. Finlay then had a second from the Morail before we went into lockdown bringing fishing to a halt until June. In between fishing, we must have had one of the driest Aprils on record with glorious weather across the country. The SEPA rainfall gauge only showed 27.2mm for the whole of the month.

In June, we were told we could fish but because of the five-mile rule, we could have no tenants. On top of this we had nearly 2 weeks of low water when fishing ceased again because the water temperature exceeded 64f. Despite this 11 rod days were fished resulting with 17 salmon, 5 grilse and 8 sea-trout being landed.

The five mile rule was relaxed in July which allowed us to take in our first tenants on the 15th which was preceded by a week of day rods. Finally, the season was underway!! We ended the month with 13 salmon, 20 grilse and 10 sea-trout.

August was another dry month with only 37.8mm of rain being recorded. In comparison August last year saw over 200mm of rain. Only 3 salmon, 3 grilse and a sea-trout were recorded.

September saw a bit more rain here and there, we caught 15 salmon, 8 grilse and a sea-trout for the month.

There were some big fish around, Finlay caught a 37” fresh fish in June from Charlies, Bill Knott caught a 19lber from Lower craigs in July, Timmy Watson caught a 22lber in Gruinards run, also in July, Alan Lutman and Gary Stokes both caught 36” salmon from Washerwoman and Contractors in September.

Top pools were Lower craigs with 13, Washerwoman with 9 and Morail with 8.

Where do I start!!

Two salmon were caught before the season was brought to a crashing halt with lockdown coming in just before the lodge’s first tenants. After the initial lifting of lockdown the five mile rule was imposed meaning that the river could only be fished by those lucky enough to live on it. Recently, this rule has been lifted and we have been able to get in day-rods who took good advantage of beats up and down not only the Carron but many other rivers. It was great to see many beats like ourselves offering fishing at a discounted price so that anglers had the opportunity to fish beats that they could normally only dream about.

There was a bit of a dry spell in June but even although we were lightly fished 17 salmon up to 19lb were landed. We also caught 5 grilse and 7 sea-trout.

Last week day-rods caught 21 salmon/grilse and 5 sea-trout with 10 of these caught on Monday to Scott Maclean’s party. The biggest, a fish of about 22lb was caught in Gruinards run to Timmy Watson. It’s just a pity the river dropped away each day.

We have the first tenants arriving tomorrow so hopefully, we can get back to some sort of normality for the rest of the season.

Season roundup

We had a good start to the season at Braelangwell with 47 salmon caught to the end of May with the first fish caught on the 7^th of March by Finlay from the Morail. We went on to land 125 salmon, 68 grilse and 20 sea trout. All the fish were returned bar 2 salmon which could not be revived because they were bleeding and 2 sea trout.

Jamie Clifton-Brown was the top rod with 12 salmon for his week followed by Toby Buckler with 8 then three people caught 6. Ronnie Macdonald caught his 6 in May which is good going anywhere, followed by Jimmy Royds who caught his 6 in three days then Liliana Sykes who had 1 in June then 5 on her return visit in September.

The biggest salmon of the season goes to Jamie Clifton-Brown with a 25lber from the Washerwoman in September, Nick Jupp caught a fresh 23.5lb fish from the Bank in May and Jimmy Royds caught a 23lber in the Scarp in September.

The best week of the season was in September when the Sykes party caught 40 salmon for the week. This week equaled the second best week ever of 40 caught in May 2011.

The top pools were the Morail with 26, Burnmouth with 21, Washerwoman and Lower Craigs with 18 and finally, Gruinards run and Contractors with 11 each. I am quite surprised about the Washerwoman which had a very slow start and just seemed dour all season. I also think that more fish would come from Gruinards run as it is not fished often enough just now

We have a lot of fish in the river, some big ones at that which is really encouraging considering what is happening with stocks in rivers elsewhere. At an early estimate there was over 900 salmon caught this season which is up on last year. More details on that to follow.

Week of the 16th September

Yet again the rain that was forecast didn’t materialize but the Jupp party managed to land 6 fish for their week.

On the 16th Nick Jupp landed a 5lber from the Tree.

On the 17th 2 fish were landed. Stuart Walker caught an 8lber from Charlies and Dave Barnfield caught a 4lb grilse from Gruinards run.

On the 18th Gary Stokes landed a 14lber from the Washerwoman. The only fish of the day.

On the 20th Nick Jup caught 2, a 6lber from the Lower Craigs and a 10lb salmon from the Tree.
