Week of the 2nd May

We had a rise in water on Sunday but by Monday morning the water was back to minus 7″. We ended the week with a small rise to minus 6″

On the 2nd Dr Stuart Gray caught a 7lb salmon from Judges followed quickly by a 2lb sea trout with sea lice. This is early for sea trout but we did have one of a pound back in the week of the 3rd of April. David Jenkins caught a7lb salmon in the Smooth pool. We haven’t had a salmon from this pool since 2016!

On the 3rd and 4th David Jenkins caught an 8.5lb and 7lber from Keepers run. Again it was 2016 since we caught a salmon there. It just shows that on a river like the Carron fish everything, keep moving and don’t get fixated by the good pools.

On the 7th David Jenkins caught a 7 lber from Gardners. He also lost a salmon in Pigeon rock.

April

April started really well with 13 springers in the book to the Alston party. in the week of the 3rd . They also had Gruinards where they caught 16 and some fishing on Dounie where they had another 5. The water height was running from 5ft 3 twice to 6 inches.

The water fell away but the next week the 11th of April 5 springers were landed to the Campbell party including a first-ever to Hilary Campbell.

In the week of the 18th of April, the Arkwright party landed 1 salmon from Pigeon rock to Jack Cooke-Hurle. The water height was down to minus 6″ on the gauge. This was the first salmon above the Morail falls. The water temperature was 51f. It has been warm enough for fish to get over the Morail falls since the end of the week of the 3rd of April which is very unusual.

The week of the 25th of April saw the water height down to minus 11″. One salmon was landed from Gardners to Alasdair Mackie on a micro Sunray double. Two other fish were hooked on Gardners but didn’t stick.

June update

Unfortunately we have been plagued with low water throughout June. It was also one of the coldest Junes where we even had a frost on midsummers night where the temperature dropped to minus 3.5c which also helped to keep the water temperature down.

Lack of water impacted on the catches but four salmon and one grilse were landed for the month. The first grilse of the season was caught by James Prior from the neck of Millers on a 1″ hitched sunray weighing 3lb.

The Sykes party caught 3 salmon. Andy MacInness caught a 12lber from Contractors on a small silver stoat conehead, Jaimie Corke caught a 15lber from the neck of Millers on a 2″ sunray hitch and Mark Butler caught an 8lber from Upper craigs on a sunray. the water was down to minus 16″ by now but the water temperature was in the mid to high 50s because of the cooler weather.

The Goodchild party caught one, a 6lber from Contractors on a size 16 Kyley. By the end of their week there was a change in the weather and the temperatures have risen.

Today, the 1st of July the tenants are not fishing because the water temperature has risen above 64f which is the temperature the river Carron proprietors recommends fishing stops.

Spring 2021

The spring started very cold with the early fish seemingly reluctant to run to Braelangwell. This resulted in good sport on the beats below. We don’t have the exact figures in but there must have been over 30 springers caught off the river to the end of March. Braelangwell caught 3 of them.

We caught 7 for April which was quite a dry month and so between that and covid restrictions this wasn’t too bad.

May saw some really good fishing with 65 salmon landed and a good many lost. Looking back through the book over the last 10 years the catches were right up there which is really encouraging considering a good many places are seeing a decline in stocks. 2011 was the best year with 106 salmon to the end of May with 66 for May, then 2013 with 75 salmon to the end of May, and 52 for May.

We will not know how many salmon were caught off the river to the end of May until the end of the season but with the beats lower down doing well at the start and then fishing steadily the rest of the spring we should have a respectable total

Week of the 24th May

On Monday we were washed off with the river peaking at about 7.5 feet.

Tuesday saw the river running at 3ft first thing and dropping nicely but it rose later in the day to about 4ft 9 Hamish Godman-Dorington landed 4 salmon before 9.30 from the Boat pool and Jamie Ellis also caught an 8lber from the Boat pool. Upstream, Archie Godman-Dorington caught a fine 16lber from the Morail and Tom Denman caught a 10lber also from the Morail. In the evening Peter O’Neil came over from the Oykel, he caught a 8lber from the Rock and lost a decent fish in Gardners. By this time the river was running at 4ft.

9 salmon were landed on Wednesday. With the river running at a foot it was perfect. Archie Godman-Dorington caught 4 to his rod. Two came from the Morail at 8 and 12lb, one from Gardners and one from Gardners run, all three were about 8lb. Richard Fisher and Benjamin Gibbons caught their first salmon. Richard’s came from Lower Craigs weighing 7.5lb and Benjamin’s came from Gruinards run weighing 8lb. Richard Hawke also caught an 8lber from Gruinards run. Jamie Ellis caught a 10lber from Kennel run and Hamish Godman-Dorington sea lived 10lber from the Bank.

Thursday saw a huge change in the weather from cool spring to summer. One fish was caught. Jamie Reynolds caught his first fish from the Boat pool weighing 6lb. The river was down to minus 2.

No more fish were caught on the last couple of days.

Week of the 17th May

Although we were plagued by low water up until Friday the Sloss party recorded 16 salmon on Braelangwell plus 8 on Dounie for the week.

On Monday, the host Robert Sloss landed a 7lb salmon from Gardners on a micro red Francis. The gauge was showing minus 11”

On Wednesday three salmon were landed to Robert’s rod. One in Gardners on a small hitch, one in Rock on a micro black Francis cone and one in the neck of the Morail on a small hitch. They weighed 6, 8 and 9lb. The river was still minus 11”

On Thursday Robert scored again catching an 11lber from Contractors on a small hitch.

On Friday the river rose most of the day peaking about 2ft 11”. Five salmon were landed, four of them after dinner. Tom Silk, James Preston, Angus Sloss and Ruaridh Nicoll caught one each from the Morail. Three were 8lb and Ruaridh’s was 10lb. Olly Alston caught a 15lber in Kennel run.

On Saturday six salmon were caught, all in the afternoon or late evening. Robert Sloss had a cracking day starting with one on Dounie in the morning then five on Braelangwell. He started off with a 16lber from Washerwoman then a 12lber from Contractors and a 13lber from Gruinards run. He finished with a pair at 8 and 9lb on the hitch from Gardners at 10 pm and 10.25 pm. It’s quite remarkable that they took a hitch at that time of the evening.

Olly Alston caught the other fish at about 9.40 pm from Kennel run which weighed about 5lb.

The river height started off at 4” dropping to minus 2” by the end of the day.

Week of the 9th May

The week started off with the water level on minus 6″.

On Monday morning Jasmine Campbell caught her first salmon from the Rock pool weighing 7lb on a 8 Ally shrimp

On Tuesday Finlay caught a sea liced 7lb fish from the tail of Upper Craigs. The water was still running at minus 6″

On Wednesday the water was up to 1ft 3. 5 salmon were caught and at least 3 were lost. Nick Furno caught his first salmon from the Morail weighing 10lb. Hugo Griffiths caught 2 and lost 2 in the Morail. Megan Mccarter caught her first salmon and after losing one in Kennel run Alex McCarthy also caught his first salmon from the Morail.

Nothing else was landed the rest of the week.

Cracking week

A cracking week was had at Braelangwell with 18 springers landed.

On Monday morning the river was running at minus 9”. Nick Jupp went out before breakfast and caught a salmon from Gardners weighing 10lb. What was remarkable was the air temp was -3c and the rod rings were freezing meaning that he had to keep putting the rod in the water to defrost them. By the afternoon the river had dropped to minus 12” and there was a bitter East wind. Alan Lutman landed a 12lber from Millers.

Three fish were lost on Tuesday.

On Thursday the river rose all morning and peaked mid-afternoon at 3ft 3. 7 salmon were landed. Alan Lutman caught first, a 14lber from Kennel run which is a sure sign fish are running. Dave Barnfield caught the first of 5 from the Morail, a fine 20lber on a conehead Cascade. Rick Verbeeten had 1, plus another from Kennel run and Finlay caught 3 in quick succession.

On Friday 8 springers were landed. We started the day with 9 inches on the gauge going down to 3 inches then back up to 6 inches by the end of fishing.

Nick Jupp caught a 10lber from the Morail first thing, Rick Verbeeten caught 2, 1 from Kennel run the other from Lower Craigs which we managed to get tagged. Roger Brackpool caught 2, 1 from Gardners and the other from the Morail. Alan Lutman caught 1 from Bank and Dave Barnfield went up to Frenchmans and caught 2.

On Saturday the river was down to minus 5”. Rick Verbeeten caught the only springer of the day from Contractors. He also caught a fresh sea trout from Gardners.

Apart from the 20lber 1 was 14lb, 2 at 12lb 4 were 10lb, 9 at 8lb and 1 at 6lb

Open again

At last, on the 25^th we managed to open albeit to 2 rods for the first week.

The week started off with very low water but some rain each day brought salmon into the beat. On the 29^th Henry Beckett caught his second ever salmon on his own from the Boat pool. He had lost one the night before on his last cast and this was also on his last cast before heading south. It weighed 8lb and took a cascade.

On the 30^th the river had risen overnight to minus 3” Tom Sitwell landed an 8lber from Judges.

On the 1^st Jake Warman landed 3 and lost 1. The river had risen to 0” first thing. He lost one after a brief fight in Kennel Run then landed a 9lber in Gardners and a 11lber in the tail of Contractors. In the afternoon he caught our first salmon above the Morail falls, from Tree, a lovely 8lber while trying out my 13ft Mackenzie FX1 rod. (I think he is planning to treat himself now).

I was offered the chance to fish and caught 2 salmon, one from the tail of Gardners and on from the rock on a cascade.

I think we lost around 7 salmon during the week, on for between a couple of minutes to just about the net which is a real pity but that’s fishing

Season summary

We caught the first salmon of the season on the 10th of March from the Morail weighing 8.5lb, caught by Finlay on a 2” Angry Ailsa tube. Finlay then had a second from the Morail before we went into lockdown bringing fishing to a halt until June. In between fishing, we must have had one of the driest Aprils on record with glorious weather across the country. The SEPA rainfall gauge only showed 27.2mm for the whole of the month.

In June, we were told we could fish but because of the five-mile rule, we could have no tenants. On top of this we had nearly 2 weeks of low water when fishing ceased again because the water temperature exceeded 64f. Despite this 11 rod days were fished resulting with 17 salmon, 5 grilse and 8 sea-trout being landed.

The five mile rule was relaxed in July which allowed us to take in our first tenants on the 15th which was preceded by a week of day rods. Finally, the season was underway!! We ended the month with 13 salmon, 20 grilse and 10 sea-trout.

August was another dry month with only 37.8mm of rain being recorded. In comparison August last year saw over 200mm of rain. Only 3 salmon, 3 grilse and a sea-trout were recorded.

September saw a bit more rain here and there, we caught 15 salmon, 8 grilse and a sea-trout for the month.

There were some big fish around, Finlay caught a 37” fresh fish in June from Charlies, Bill Knott caught a 19lber from Lower craigs in July, Timmy Watson caught a 22lber in Gruinards run, also in July, Alan Lutman and Gary Stokes both caught 36” salmon from Washerwoman and Contractors in September.

Top pools were Lower craigs with 13, Washerwoman with 9 and Morail with 8.
