Salmon Fishing at Braelangwell Lodge, Scotland
Today we have two guests on the river, Chris Plank and Fen Howieson. The river was sitting just below zero on the gauge and the water temperature was 39.6, so a real good chance of a springer today. The guys fished hard from below The Morail, but no joy.
The Kyle of Sutherland rivers have had very little water since the rivers opened on the 11th of January so when it finally came this week we knew fish would be caught somewhere.
It was very close between the Carron and the Oykel but we think the Carron got off the mark first. Allan Donaldson caught a 8lber from the Raven on the Cornhill side and Billy Murdoch caught a 10lber from the Black eye on beat 2 of the Oykel 20 minutes later.
The weather was a lot colder today with heavy sleet and rain showers but it warmed up a little late afternoon so Jim Gilmour, the Gruinards Ghillie went to the Morail for a cast and was rewarded with 2 springers in quick succession, one weighing 12lb and the other 10lb.
The fishing season opened today on the Kyle of Sutherland rivers but we doubt there will be much to report as the whole area has suffered from gales since last night.
Finlay did go down and put a fly through the Morail first thing, he caught a grilse and sea trout kelt.
The river was running at 2ft and the water temp was 39f.

Apologies for the lack of posts but contrary to what the Met office have promised in the way of rain we must have had one of the driest six weeks for some time so catches have suffered.
We did have a good start to the month with the Gardner party catching 13 for their week but after that the water went. The Gray party had a fantastic family holiday but Just the one fish was caught. Andrew Durward caught his first ever, a sea-liced Grilse from Burnmouth.
The Else party also had a fine family holiday but nothing was caught.
The Benson party managed 2 Grilse, one to Mr A Braithwaite from the Boat on a riffle hitch and one to Mrs Caroline Dickinson from Contractors on a 14 cascade. By this time the water was down to minus 12.
The Sykes party managed one salmon for their week, a 7lber from the Scarp of all places on a quarter inch micro conehead with the water at minus 14.
Unfortunately, the Gilmour party could not connect with anything in their week.
So far this week we had one grilse on Monday to Rick Verbeeten in the Washerwoman.
We thought we were in for a spate today as we were forecast heavy rain but it never materialised.
Monday started with 4ft6 on the gauge and the water was cooler with the Northwest wind. By late afternoon we were down to 18″. John McCulloch caught a fresh grilse of 4lb in Contractors and then an 18lber just before the tree’s at the tail of the Washerwoman.
On Tuesday Three grilse were landed, one to Christopher Lees-Jones in Upper Craigs and two more to John McCulloch from Charlies and Gardners.
Wednesday looked promising with minus 3 on the gauge, 2 fish were caught by the host Paul Gardner, one in Millers weighing 14lb and a grilse from Margarets. Wednesday also saw our first morning with frost first thng.
Thursday saw the river rise all morning peaking at about 4ft6 but dropped quickly. Rex Wilkinson hit the tail of Millers right landing 4 between 5pm and 5.40pm weighing 14lb,12lb,8lb and 4lb all from the same spot. Paul Gardner also caught a 13lber in Contractors.
Saturday started with 2ft3 on the gauge, again Millers produced a 16lb salmon to Philip Gardner.
The Wingfield-Digby party caught 6 grilse and 2 seatrout for their week. Alex Wingfield-Digby was top rod with 4 of them. His wife Emma, caught one in Burnmouth that was tagged, it had the number 61 on it. This fish was caught in Charlie’s on the 17th of June by Andy MacInnes.
The fishing was hard going, you had to work hard for a fish which i hear is the case on the Oykel too but Gruinards, opposite caught 12 for the week and i hear an angler on Amat had 4 one evening so the fish were there.
