The experts have been saying that the summer of 2018 has been one of the driest on record, certainly since 1976. The Carron has been no exception with the last proper rain falling around the last week of May and the water temp reaching 73f in July, unsurprisingly there was very little fishing done at Braelangwell. Some parties didn’t fish at all which certainly the best thing for the salmon and we must thank the tenants for showing restraint.
Only one grilse was landed for July which was caught on the back of a small rise on the 21st. Stephen Wingfield-Digby caught the 4lb fish in the Washerwoman.
On the 4th of August, Oly Ward caught a 4lb grilse, again in the Washerwoman on another small rise. On the 5th the river rose to around minus 6 during the night which was the highest the river had been since the week of the 17th of June !! The following day, with the river back to minus 10 we caught 3, two to C Rees-Jones from the Washerwoman and one to Andrew Thorley from the Rock pool.
We are due rain this week so fingers crossed.
