Week of the 13th May

The Sloss party were plagued with low water all week so did very well to catch 8 salmon.
Top rod was Rob Sloss with 3. He had 1 from Contractors on the 14th on a small Collie then 2 on the 14th, one from Gardners on a micro red Francis cone and on from the neck of the Morail on a small red Francis cone. They weighed 8, 7 and 11lb.
Hugo Denee caught 2 for his short visit to Braelangwell. Both before breakfast, one from Gardners and one from Rock weighing 8 and 7lb.
James Preston, Rob Gould and Charlie Arden all had one each all from the Rock pool. Two were caught on a half inch collie and one on a 12 Park shrimp.
The height was between minus 9 and minus 15″ all week.

Week of the 7th May

The Jupp party were plagued with low water all week but managed 5 salmon between them.
On the 7th with minus 6″ on the gauge three were landed and another was lost at the net. James Prior landed his first ever salmon from the Washerwoman weighing 9lb. He also lost the fish at the net in Gardners. Roger Brackpool caught an 8lber from Lower Craigs and Rick Verbeeten caught an 11lber from the Washerwoman.
On the 9th Roger caught a second salmon from Charlies weighing 6lb.
On Saturday morning at 7.40am Nick Jupp caught an 8lber from Gardners which was covered in long tail sea lice. The gauge was on minus 11″

Week of the 30th April

Last week we had our best April week since 1980 catching 22 salmon for the week so expectations were high. The river had dropped away but was still ok. We caught 7 for the week and also lost several.
Steven Wade started his week with his first ever salmon from Gardners run. He then caught another from Contractors on Wednesday.
On the 1st Robin Minter-Kemp caught a 10lb salmon on a collie from Keepers and Chris Higham caught an 8lb salmon from Judges.
On the 4th Dick Threlfall caught a 10lber from Pigeon rock on a Kyley.
On the 5th Paul Welling had an 8lber from Gardners and Chris Higham finally caught a salmon skating a collie in the Washerwoman.
Considering the water peaked at minus 3″ and was off the bottom of the gauge one day we didn’t do badly.

Having a rough count of salmon caught off the river to the end of April we think no fewer than 210 were landed. We must have had some of the best fishing anywhere.

Week of the 16th April

Professor Gilmore’s party saw the end of the snowmelt that has kept the river at a very good height for the last 5 or so weeks. They caught 5 salmon for their week but it was hard going as fish still seemed reluctant to run up to the middle of the river.
On the 18th Professor A T Elder caught a 9lb salmon in Contractors. Some fish were obviously running as a fish rose and then pulled the fly in Macallan. Gruinards also caught a salmon with long tail lice in Bank.
On the 19th Alasdair Mackie caught a 10lb salmon from the Rock pool. This fish must have had some kind of encounter on it’s way to being caught as it had considerable scale loss and it was only played for 3 or 4 minutes before it came in. Jerry Alexander caught a very strong salmon from Kennel run weighing 10lb
On the 21st Jerry caught 2 more fish and lost 1 in quick succession. 1 came from Gardners and 1 from Rock, both on a Sunray Shadow.
The river stayed around the 9″ mark all week but dropped to minus 4 on Saturday. We haven’t heard much from the rest of the river but there was a minimum of 10 caught.

Week of the 8th April

The Gilmour/Campbell party had good water all week but as it was snow melt the water was cold resulting in the salmon being reluctant to run up from the lower beats. We caught 2 salmon for the week at Braelangwell. Colin Campbell caught 1 in the Morail at about 8lb and Peter Crawfurd caught 1 in Kennel run at 7lb.
The party also had Cornhill where they caught 4.

There was good sport at Gledfield which is a 2 rod beat. They caught 21 springers for the week and another 11 were lost. There is a lot of availability on this beat. We don’t know what came off Invercarron but believe there was in excess of 35 fish caught from the river for the week.

Week of the 26th March

It’s been a cold start to the season at Braelangwell which has certainly suited the lower beats but Olly Alston got us off the mark with a 6lb springer from the tail of the Morail at 8pm on Monday night. The air temp was several degrees colder than the water by this time of night !! Olly had already caught a fish on Gledfield earlier in the day too. The next morning Olly went on to catch another springer at 7.30am weighing 5.5lb then caught 2 more down on Gledfield and Dounie.
We didn’t catch any more salmon at Braelangwell but the party caught a total of 8 for their week.

It’s not always easy to find out what is getting caught downstream but we hear one angler caught 5 on Invercarron in two days. plus there was at least another one caught on Invercarron. We hear of three off Cornhill too which gives us at least 17 off the river for the week.

Week of the 24th April

Braelangwell has had its best April since 2000 with 35 landed. Even although the early springers went over the Morail falls at the start of April we have been seeing a lot of fish throughout the beat, particularly in Gardners, Rock and Boat. Most of the fish are in the 6lb to 9lb class but an odd bigger one is jumping and we can expect the big May fish any day now. Gruinards have caught 34 so a season total between ourselves and Gruinards of 70 salmon from the water we share is very good.

We had good water throughout the week with the levels between 1’6″ and minus 2″. Braelangwell landed 10 for the week, Gruinards, opposite had 13, Dounie had 10, we hear Cornhill had 7 and Amat had 3. Without knowing what came off the other 2 beats 43 salmon for the week isn’t bad at all.

On Monday we had 3, Dr Stuart Grey caught 1 in Gruinards run and Jerry Alexander caught 2, 1 in Washerwoman and 1 in Lower Craigs.
On Tuesday 2 were caught, both to Dr David Jenkins.1 from the Tree pool and 1 from the Bank. Tuesday was bitterly cold with heavy snow showers all day.
Thursday also saw us catch 2 salmon, 1 from Gardners to Dr Stuart Grey and 1 to Dr David Jenkins from Kennel run. There was a lot of friendly banter going back and forward across the river as Gruinards caught 7 on Thursday !!
3 were caught on Saturday morning, 1 to Dr Jenkins in Kennel run then Jerry Alexander had 2, 1 in Gardners and 1 in Boat.

Week of the 10th of April

Monday started with low water but the river started rising on Tuesday due to heavy rain. Colin Campbell got Lady Valerie Gilmour’s party off the mark with 6lb fish from the Morail followed by an 8lber to Peter Crawfurd. The river was rising quickly by then and rose 6 inches while he played the fish.
On Wednesday the river was on 1’6″, back from over 5ft overnight. Mr Scott-Demster caught 3 from the Morail, best 12lb. Lady Valerie Gilmour and Peter Crawfurd also caught 1 each in the Morail and Colin Campbell caught 1 in the Rock pool. 6 for a day in April and 3 to a rod are not bad.
Thursday saw 3 added to the book. Elisabeth McInnes caught 1 in Gardners, Judith Campbell caught 1 in the Morail and Lady Gilmour had 1 from the Rock. The river was running at 6 inches.
Friday saw 4 caught, Colin Campbell and Lady Gilmour had 1 each from Gruinards run, Mr Strang-Steel had 1 from the Scarp and Judith Campbell had 1 from the Rock pool. The river was at minus 2.
Saturday saw strong wind and heavy showers again, the river was back up to 6″ and there was also fresh snow on the hills. The only fish of the day came to Peter Crawfurd in the Gardners pool weighing 7lb.
This gives us 16 springers for the week and considering the wind we had to put up with we are very pleased with that.

Update

At last we have water.
Yesterday 2 fish were caught on Braelangwell and quite a lot of fish were seen which was encouraging.
Today, we had 1’6″ on the gauge down from over 5′ overnight. The river only dropped 6 inches all day. Despite strong wind all day Mr Scott-Demster caught 3 salmon and lost 1 in the Morail, Lady Valerie Gilmour had 1 in the Morail, Mr Peter Crawford also had 1 in the Morail and lastly, Mr Colin Campbell caught 1 from the Rock pool.
6 salmon landed and 2 lost on such a wet and windy day is very commendable.

Week of the 3rd April

The Godman-Dorington party suffered from very low water all week.
Despite this, on the 4th Archie Godman-Dorington caught a 6lb salmon in the Washerwoman on a Monkey then on the 6th Thomas Denman caught his first ever salmon from the Neck of the Morail. It weighed 8lb and took an Ally shrimp.
