February round-up

Tags :

Gauge MorailIn the January round-up I was saying how we had missed the worst of the flooding, however, not long into February we had a spate of around 10ft. Thankfully, it did very little damage other than moved some shingle about. Not long after the spate the weather turned cold and dry.

The first fish off the Carron this season came off Cornhill on the 17th of February, it was caught by Allan Donaldson in the Raven. To my knowledge it is the only salmon caught on the Carron so far. The only other river in the Kyle of Sutherland catchment to have caught fish is the Shin. They have had 2.

This week started with a mild front coming through. The river rose to 4ft on Monday, unfortunately, because of the snow melt the water temperature only briefly rose above 38f which we need for salmon to get to Braelangwell. Finlay caught a sea-trout kelt in the Morail and Paul Moran also caught one in the Boat pool. On Tuesday the river was running at 1ft 3, the beat was fished for a couple of hours but no luck yet.
